Cultural events to enjoy in February and March
Setsubun is a traditional festival on February 3rd to wish for a prosperous year without any misfortune. We generally eat ‘Eho-maki’ and conduct ‘mame-maki’ to celebrate this day.
‘Eho-maki’ is the staple of Setsubun which are thick sushi rolls with seven ingredients including mushrooms, cucumbers and omelet. They are consumed to hope for family’s health and happiness. You are to eat it in one continuous go to be connected to fortune and fate as there is a chance of losing your luck upon failure. Also, there is a direction assigned each year to face while eating under the belief that the God is in that direction. For example, the west-southwest was allocated as the ‘good fortune direction’ for this year.
‘Hinamatsuri’ is a doll’s festival to wish for girl’s happy life which is celebrated on March 3rd. Most families with girls would display dolls called ‘Hina-ningyo’ from the middle of February until that day. We also eat “Chirashi-zushi” which have ingredients like prawns, lotus root and beans. In addition, “Hina-arare” – bite-sized rice crackers with green, pink, yellow and white colors are eaten. The secret behind these four colours is that each of them represent the four seasons in Japan- spring, summer, fall, and winter and that we hope the girls to be happy and healthy throughout the year.
