Police probe pop star’s disappearance from ocean cruise

Canada’s renowned “Mounties” police (unofficial motto: “we always get our man”) are investigating the mysterious disappearance of a flamboyant German cross-dressing pop singer from a cruise ship off Newfoundland.

Daniel Kaiser-Küblböck, 33, had “attracted attention aboard because he mainly walked around in women’s clothes and behaved aggressively” according to the German tabloid newspaper Bild.

Aida Cruises says Kaiser-Küblböck vanished from the cruise ship AIDAluna somewhere off the coast of Newfoundland during the ship’s current 16-day cruise from Hamburg to New York. He is thought to have plunged overboard into frigid seas.

The ship, distinguished by the famous Aida lips-and-eye motif painted on its forward section, was heading along the Canadian coast after sailing from the chilly waters of Qaqortoq, Greenland. Cruise officials believe Kaiser-Küblböck, 33, threw himself from the fifth floor deck into the icy seas. An eyewitness saw someone jump from Deck 5 of the ship, Bild reported.

European media, however, have quoted close friends of the German star insisting he was not suicidal. They say he may have fallen accidentally while fooling on the balcony railing. There is talk of an argument with a barman shortly before Kaiser-Küblböck was last sighted. Unless the cruise line has evidence, how can it be proved he went overboard at all?

The cruise began on 29 August 2018 and is due to end today, Friday 14 September 2018, when the 251-metre AIDAluna docks at Cape Liberty, New York City.

Kaiser-Küblböck sprang into the limelight in 2003 as a contestant on a German national talent show, Germany Seeks the Superstar. Known for his flamboyant theatrics and high-pitched voice, Kaiser-Küblböck later released several singles and appeared on reality shows.

The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre in St John’s (a city on Newfoundland Island off Canada’s Atlantic coast) coordinated the search for the missing pop star. Holland America Line’s MS Zuiderdam was nearby and joined the search. A surveillance aircraft and a Canadian Armed Forces Cormorant helicopter could find no trace of Kaiser-Küblböck.

The Canadian Joint Task Force Atlantic (JTFA) later confirmed it had called off the quest, believing the survival time for anyone in the ice-cold seas was brief. It handed the investigation over to the Newfoundland and Labrador division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (“the Mounties”), who are treating it as a missing person case.

Aida Cruises has added that it is “deeply concerned about the tragic incident” and is cooperating fully with the investigation.

The last photograph of Kaiser-Küblböck before he boarded AIDAluna on 29 August 2018 shows him at the cruise terminal in Hamburg dressed stylishly in a long black skirt, white blouse and black heels.
