Thousands of passengers and millions of dollars will be disembarking from cruise ships in Port Douglas over the coming months.

The peak ocean cruising season for Tropical North Queensland will see 24,500 passengers in Port Douglas plus thousands of staff and boats to restock.

The financial influence of cruise stops on the region is enormous with the ships adding nearly $7.8 million in direct and indirect impacts last season to the Douglas Shire economy, according to figures from Cruise Lines International.

In Port Douglas there were 22 calls, 31,493 passengers and 1859 crew.

Tara Bennett, executive officer at Tourism Port Douglas Daintree (TPDD), said nine boats will be visiting over the next three months, with Port Douglas continuing to be a popular stop over.

“The natural beauty of the region is high on a visitor’s wish list. Port Douglas and Daintree tourism operators and our local tourism ambassadors have done a lot of hard work beforehand to ensure every passenger who visits Port Douglas and Daintree leaves having had a great experience.

“For shore excursions, visitors have a lot to choose from, including exploring the World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest, a half day visit to the Great Barrier Reef, sightseeing, shopping or being pampered in one of the luxury spas.”

Ms Bennett said TPDD would continue to work year round to meet cruise ship operators at travel and trade shows as well as hosting representatives in region on familiarisations.

“The excellent feedback every year from the industry demonstrates Port Douglas Daintree continues to be a highlight.”

The next boat into port is one of the largest to dock off Port Douglas, with the arrival of Majestic Princess and her 3611 passengers on September 23.

The peak season concludes with the arrival of Pacific Dawn on December 4.
