High summer temperatures and sunny weather in holiday areas have fueled the demand of international travelers for short break vacations which are typical for the season.
According to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office, 38.6 million international overnight stays were counted in accommodations with at least ten beds from January to June, an increase of five percent over the same period of the previous year. June alone contributed eight million overnight stays, a strong increase of seven percent, to this good result.
“The first half of 2018 confirms the high popularity of Germany as a holiday destination. Already available detailed results for the first five months show above-average growth in camping holidays of 25 percent. The market share of the Camping segment for all incoming overnight stays is 2.6 percent. Above all, demand from our neighboring countries, such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Poland is rising steadily. The persistently sunny weather gives us tailwind for an excellent summer season,” explains Petra Hedorfer, chairwoman of the board of the German National Tourist Board (GNTB).
