On the 22nd of September Queen Street Plaza will come alive to the beat of the African drums. This free one-day event is a fun, family-friendly affair that showcases an amazing array of diverse arts, music, dancing, cultural performances and authentic African food.

Showcasing foods from Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Ethiopia, and more, festival-goers will really get to enjoy flavours from the continent of Africa. An adventure for your taste buds awaits with things like ghanaian style kebab, African Plantains, Mafe (peanut butter stew), Accara (vegetarian bean fritters), Jerk chicken, doubles, Koeksisters , Bunny chow and middle eastern hummus on the menus.

There will also be plenty of opportunity to show for African giftware and jewellery.

“Working with the food vendors and the performers we are so pleased with all the enthusiasm and excitement everyone has brought to the table” says festival director Himanshi Munshaw Luhar. Queen Victoria Market is known for its cultural events and Foodie Trails has been a long time partner with the market in delivering these experiences. “African Festival Melbourne is going to be such a great experience. We have been working closely with community partners in putting together a day that the whole family can enjoy” say Munshaw Luhar.

The stage will be full of amazing entertainment with groups like One Spirit Africa, Wassawumba, Melbourne Djembe, and afrobeats by Kwabo Events performing and running workshops for festival-goers to get involved and learn some new moves

The festival will be hosted by Dorcas Maphakela recipient of the 2017 Multicultural Awards for Excellence by the Victorian Multicultural Commission. Dorcas is the Founder/Producer and Presenter of OZ AFRICAN TV and works tirelessly within her various roles in uplifting the African community.
