Upon consultation with the International Masters Games Association, the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai will continue preparations for commencement in May 2021 as originally planned. In light of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai Organising Committee will extend its cooperation to relevant organisations and sporting federations. We hope the Games will capture the uplifting spirit of sports and unify participants and spectators alike, especially if coinciding with international rebound and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organised by the International Masters Games Association (IMGA), the World Masters Games is an international multi-sport athletics competition held every four years for athletes over the age of 30. With a philosophy of ‘Sport for Life’, the competition welcomes any sporting enthusiast well into senior age groups. Hosted for the first time in Asia and celebrating its 10th edition, the World Masters Game 2021 Kansai will be met with anticipation.

The 2021 edition will last over 17 days in the Kansai region of Japan, covering 13 prefectures and municipalities. This is expected to contribute to Japan’s sport tourism with each prefecture appealing a distinct landscape – Kyoto is famed for its manicured gardens and vibrant temples, Osaka for its lively nightlife and rich foods and Kobe as a modern port city. Surrounding prefectures are also expected to gain traction through the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai, as with other areas of Japan which will be easily accessible.

Corresponding with the national affinity with sports and companionship, Australians have been highly receptive to the World Masters Games, hosting them in Sydney in 2009, and representing 25% of participants in the most previous edition in Auckland, New Zealand. A total of 50,000 participants are expected to compete in the World Masters Games 2021 Kansai edition.
