Resilient Kerala to host record delegates

Kerala Travel  Mart (KTM) 2018 will open in Kochi with record number of buyers and sellers on Friday, 28 September to showcase products from India’s premier destination. Tenth edition of the pioneering tourism promotional event is special for two reasons-that Kerala was experiencing its best arrival figures this year just before the natural catastrophe struck in mid August and washed away many things and that the God’s Own Country tourism stakeholders have worked relentlessly to literally clean-up the mess to put together an ever bigger travel mart.

Baby Mathew, Kerala Travel Mart 2018 President, told eGTMedia: “We, Kerala people, have worked together to revive tourism. We’ll be hosting 570 international delegates from 63 contries and 190 Indian buyers to interact with 350 exhibitors over three days of the Mart.” 80 of them are new exhibitors offering newer products of Kerala.

Abraham George, immediate past president, KTM Society, said: “Responsible tourism has always been a priority for Kerala Travel Mart. We have a 9 point resolution for sustainable practice and all member establishments display and abide by those points.” Employing local work force, reducing and recycling waste and buying local, natural products are among the resolutions.

As a late starter in tourism, Kerala launched KTM in 2000 to showcase all its products at one place. Having members across tourism products from small to big,  makes it a single market place for all. Jose Dominic, first Presedent of KTM, said: “We all worked for rescue, relief and rehabilitation during  floods, the biggest catastophe since 1924 and are now ready for rebuilding tourism. All tourism establishments are back on track.” Kerala currently accounts for 20 percent of India’s tourism.

Bi-annual Kerala Travel Mart is organised by 18 member strong Kerala Travel Mart Society with additional membership of Secretary and Director, Kerala Tourism and Kerala Tourism Promotion Board. KTM Society has 700 members who are tourism service providers of the popular tourism destination of India. 36 members of national and international media are also attending KTM 2018 and are hosted on a pre tour to one of the the four itineraries.400 buyers will be taking post tours.

The floods have only made people more resilient. Mr Dominic said: “KTM will be the first global exposure to show that Kerala is back and is on the mode of building a new Kerala.”

Incidentally, no star hotel in Kochi was affected during floods, except a low lying portion of JW Marriott, Kochi.
