The state of Rio de Janeiro closed 2018 with a significant decrease in the number of murders. It was the December with the lowest number of victims of the past 27 years. 
Taking the monthly records into account, according to the Public Security Institute (ISP), official statistics agency, it was the lowest number of deaths since November 2015: 341. When we compare with the same month in 2017, the reduction was of 23%, and, in comparison with November 2018, the reduction was of 1%. In the months of October, November and December, there was a decrease of 21% in comparison with the same period of 2017 and 5% in comparison with the three previous months of 2018 (July, August and September).
The indicator of violent lethality (murder, robbery aggravated by death, bodily injury followed by death and death by intervention of State agent) also presented significant results: it was the lowest since December 2015, with 447 victims, a reduction of 18% in comparison with December 2017 and 14% in comparison with November 2018. For deaths by intervention of State agent, the increase in comparison with December of the previous year was of 3.5%, however, comparing the last quarter of the year (October, November and December), with the previous quarter (July, August and September), there was a decrease of 16%.
In cargo thefts, the reduction in comparison with December 2017 was of 32%. In the last three months, the decrease in comparison with the same period in 2017 was of 28%. Vehicle thefts presented a decrease of 15% in comparison with December 2017, and 6% in comparison with November 2018. The data disclosed by ISP refers to the security incident reports drafted in every Civil Police station, in the capital and inland, during the month of December.
