There are many things to do in New York City, but next time you are feeling restless, immerse yourself in greenery with a great outdoor adventure by taking a road trip through New York State. Kick back and relax in small towns with charming restaurants, groovy art galleries/museums and amazing wineries to make your next road a trip worthwhile.

Long Island, New York

About an hour and a half from the city, Long Island offers surprises for all kinds of visitors, from families looking for relaxing nature or enriching cultural experiences to travelers hoping for a quick weekend getaway.

Start the day strolling the boardwalk at Jones Beach State Park or experience the picturesque beaches at Coopers Beach in Southampton and Main Beach in East Hampton. These beaches are some of the most popular beaches in the New York area making these some of the best places for a beach trip in Long Island. Hop back in the car after some much-needed relaxation at the beach and take a trip down to Long Island Wine Country to sample some of the best reds, white and roses. Spend your time at Jamesport Vineyards for a rosé to make you think you’re in France, Sparkling Pointe for all things bubbly, and Pindar Vineyards for a sunflower field photo you’ve been dying to capture. Have dinner at Noah’s, a New American eatery and stay at Sound View Greenport or Montauk Hotel & Spa.

Hudson Valley, New York

Drive across the Hudson River to kick off your road trip to the Hudson Valley. Park your car to take a break from driving and experience panoramic views while walking across the mile-long, Walkway Over the Hudson.

When you arrive in New Paltz, you’ll find the historic Mohonk Mountain House perched on a cliff, step into nature by hiking Mohonk Preserve or Minnewaska State Park and stroll Main Street to grab a bite at Lola’s Café New Paltz or Huckleberry. Drive a little deeper to Hudson, where you’ll enjoy signature craft cocktails, a gratifying farm-to-fork experience and unique accommodation stay at WM Farmers and Sons. Visit the iconic landmark, the Hudson Athens Lighthouse to end your road trip on a high note.

Finger Lakes, New York

Escape to the Finger Lakes, about four hours from New York City, to stroll the charming town of Corning. Start your day off exploring the Corning Museum of Glass. Spend hours around the museum learning about 35 centuries of history, watching expert gaffers perform hot glass demos and taking part in the “Make Your Own Glass” experience allowing visitors to try their hands at glassblowing, glass-forming, and sandblasting.

To take advantage of the day and surround yourself with nature, take the ‘paddle the palisades’ with Southern Tier Kayak Tours to kayak through the calming waters of Chemung River. Visit Heron Hill Winery, that produces cool climate wines that reflect the Finger Lakes region and pair well with food. After a long day, make dinner reservations at Sorge’s Restaurant, check in at Hilton Garden Inn and grab some ice cream at Dippity Do Dahs Homemade Ice Cream.
