An indie-folk night with Steve Gunn at Salon

Steve Gunn’s broad musical spectrum continues to expand with every new album. His affinity with music began when he lost himself in his sister’s cassette tape archive, familiarising himself with punk rock and rap. His expanding musical horizons led him to folk, psychedelic, country, funk and even Indian classical music. The inspiration he drew from these genres and many others has lead Gunn to a solo career, which officially started in 2007. Shortly before going solo, between 2005 and 2007 he played in the band GHQ whose other members include Pete Nolan and Marcia Basset. Besides his eight solo studio albums, Gunn has recorded songs and albums with names including Hiss Golden Messenger, Shawn David McMillen, Mike Cooper, Mike Gangloff and The Black Twig Pickers. Without a doubt, his most special collaboration is with the 70’s folk-rock icon Michael Chapman, in his album 50. In 2012, he crossed paths with Kurt Vile, who gave his first concert in Turkey at Salon İKSV in 2014, and joined Kurt Vile’s band The Violators as a guitarist. At the beginning of 2019, Gunn’s album The Unseen In Between, which reminded many of Bob Dylan and Bert Jansch’s mid 60’s characteristic songwriting techniques, was released from the famous record company Matador. On 23 September, Steve Gunn will be at Salon for a lovely autumn night.

The band that brings Australia’s hot weather and 60’s psychedelic pop together: Babe Rainbow

Babe Rainbow released their eponymous EP compiling their early singles in 2015. This EP has not only drawn attention from music enthusiasts but also one half of Broken Bells; Danger Mouse, who has recently released Lux Prima, a collaborative album with Karen O and has previously worked as a musician and producer with Jack White, Norah Jones, Julian Casablancas, Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Black Keys, Beck, Iggy Pop, Wayne Coyne, David Lynch and countless others. Danger Mouse personally picks whom to sign with his record company 30th Century Records and has included Babe Rainbow in his roster. Their self-titled debut album was produced by Stu Mackenzie, the mastermind of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and released in the summer of 2017. Cosmic and tropic elements thrive in guitar melodies full of serotonin in this album that is full of songs reflecting the creative face of late 60’s music, especially in J.J Cale, The Grateful Dead and the later period of The Beatles. Double Rainbow, their second album, was released last year. Babe Rainbow will meet the Istanbul audience on 26 September at Salon.

Swiss electro-pop duo Elvett to make debut in Turkey

Lyn m and Alain Frey met in 2003 and found out they had so many musical interests in common that they have brought life to Elvett on January 2015. Their single, Home, was released the same year and mesmerized listeners with Lyn m’s powerful voice rising over soft electronica touches. The wonderful video that accompanied the song has won them a substantial listener base in Turkey. Their music, self-described as electro-acoustic, carried Elvett to prominent festivals and events including Paléo Festival, Eurockéennes de Belfort and Printemps de Bourges. In 2015 they also released their first EP resembling an LP, Who Shot First? loaded with addictive songs such as So Easy To Leave and Who Shot First? Following two singles titled Mama and Man, both released in 2018, they will deliver the powerful emotions of their songs at their first concert in Turkey on 27 September.

Polynation’s electronic sound will surround the Salon stage

The words atmosphere and rhythm are ideally suited for describing the seductive electronic music of Polynation. They released their first EP Allogamy from the Amsterdam based record company Atomnation label, known for signing such names as Weval and Gidge. This EP embraced an all organic sound, had catchy melodies blending into a seductive foundation, and was virtually a stage for the dance of drums and synthesizer. The success they attained with Allogamy paved the way for being invited to important festivals such as ADE, Best Kept Secret and Eurosonic. It didn’t take long before they attracted music guru Gilles Peterson’s attention, known for sensing good music from miles away. Thus they appeared on his programme for BBC Radio 6 Music several times. Songs including Why you, Sufi and Anther have taken their place among favourites of electronic music listeners. Their live performances have reinforced their success with an improvisational spirit that enhances the effect of their recordings. They released their long-awaited first LP last year in May. The first Polynation album titled Igneous has been widely considered to be among the best debut albums of 2019. Now, Polynation is ready to meet their fans in Istanbul at Salon on 28 September.
