Luxury boutique safari operator, Sanctuary Retreats, is delighted to announce the latest edition to its portfolio of African luxury camps and lodges.

Scheduled to open in July 2020, the brand new Sanctuary Tambarare is nestled amongst fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya, in Kenya’s Laikipia County, north east of Nairobi. And its name is entirely apt; ‘Tambarare’ means ‘plains’ in Swahili, and the Camp overlooks the grassy plateau of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, some 90,000 acres of unspoilt African landscape, home to the highest density of wildlife in Kenya outside the Maasai Mara.

Sanctuary Tambarare has been designed to deliver the perfect balance of adventure and serenity. After a action-packed day out on safari in this stunning wildlife retreat, the secluded tented Camp offers up a tranquil haven that perfectly reflects its surroundings – with a generous helping of indulgence, where guests can relax and indulge in Sanctuary Retreats’ customary attentive five-star service.

Spacious and airy, just 10 luxurious canvas tents each feature sumptuous super-king beds and ensuites replete with walk-in showers and double basins, as well as their own private verandas overlooking the grassy plains. Individually decorated in a boutique-meets-bush style that evokes Safari’s golden age, each one has been updated with contemporary comforts and amenities, from teak floors to unique furnishings and Maasai-inspired art that reflect the local culture. Gently billowing white curtains add to the sense of romance, framing floor-to-ceiling cinematic views of the spectacular landscape beyond.

Elsewhere, inside the spacious and beautifully appointed main tent, inviting sofas and chairs, encourage guests to linger, while the boma outside is the ideal setting for a sundowner while listening to the Camp’s safari guides share thrilling tales and local legends.

At Sanctuary Tambarare’s superb restaurant, guests can expect to enjoy impressive delicious dishes, fresh salads and freshly baked breads all prepared in camp by experienced, friendly chefs, happy to attend to guests’ wishes and any requirements, from vegetarian meals to a special anniversary dinner. There’s also a refined bar tent with a welcoming deck and plenty of loungers overlooking the boma.

Beyond the Camp, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. As well as Africa’s ‘Big Five’, expect to see giraffe, gazelle, zebra, cheetahs, jackal and hyena, not to mention the largest population of black rhino in East Africa, plus the world’s last two white rhinos. There’s plenty of up-close-and-personal wildlife encounters to be had including daily game drives, lion tracking, horse-riding alongside rhino and zebra, and thrilling night game drives (not available in most of Kenya’s national parks and reserves), each experience enriched by expert guides.

The launch of Sanctuary Tambarare swells the number of African camps and lodges in Sanctuary Retreats’ portfolio to 13, and also complements the Company’s other Kenyan  property, the award-winning Sanctuary Olonana, located in the Maasai Mara, which reopened in 2018 after an extensive refurbishment.

Stay longer, pay less.
