Safari enthusiasts are sure to welcome the dramatic transformation of Sanctuary Swala – the latest property to undergo an extensive refurbishment as part the multi-million-dollar investment program currently rolling out across the Sanctuary Retreats portfolio.

Located in the heart of Maasai country in a remote corner of Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park, Sanctuary Swala is set in total seclusion amongst ancient baobabs and giant acacia trees overlooking a busy waterhole and the picturesque savannah beyond.

Twelve new spacious open-plan pavilions feature wooden floors, beautiful bespoke furniture and artworks, along with plush king-size beds swathed in neutral linensguaranteed to deliver a peaceful night’s sleep. Contemporary interiors are decorated throughout in elegant neutral-tones and matching safari-chic furnishings replete with rich African textiles, which blend seamlessly with the raw and natural beauty of the surrounding bush. Indoor and outdoor bush-view showers deliver floor-to-ceiling 180° views, and each pavilion’s’ expansive private terrace looks out over the waterhole, putting wildlife almost within touching distance.

The effortless blend of safari chic and open-air living is also evident in the Camp’s welcoming new communal space. Set on stilts beneath traditional peaked thatched roofing, it features an elevated lounge, library and a slick new gin bar offering refreshing cocktails and incredible views of the nearby watering hole. A stylish restaurant is also the perfect place to enjoy a candlelit dinner under the stars while savouring expertly prepared dishes showcasing local flavours and seasonal ingredients.

Enhancing its appeal is the Camp’s location deep in the heart of Tarangire National Park where Northern Tanzania’s largest population of elephant makes its home, as well a rare species of white giraffe. Game drives out from Sanctuary Swala reward guests with plenty of ‘Big Five’ encounters, as herds of elephant, crashes of hippos and prides of lions all roam within sight and earshot of the camp. Or explore the bush by foot, navigated by expert guides through grassland, to the top of rocky hills and past ambling oryx, then venture to the midst of the gully’s vegetation in search of sleepy kudu or dwarf mongoose seeking sanctuary in abandoned termite mounds. After-dark drives also allow for exclusive sightings of nocturnal creatures which include the elusive leopard, the bush baby, bat-eared foxes and the African wildcat.

Prices at Sanctuary Swala start from USD485 per person per night, twin share, for 1 – 3 nights, including all meals and drinks (excluding premium brands) and transfers to and from the airstrip to the Camp plus a choice of two daily shared game viewing activities.
