The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced that a parking structure, which opened in 2019, has been honored for design. In their 2020 Awards of Excellence, the International Parking & Mobility Institute named the Long-Term Parking Garage at SFO the “Best Design of a Parking Facility”. The six-story, 1.2 million-square-foot parking garage has 3,600 stalls and features an automated parking guidance system that signals drivers about the availability of stalls. The facility also features a public art installation, Coding, a façade of glass and steel that spells out “SFO” in Morse code.

“For many travelers, our Long-Term Parking facility is the first impression of SFO,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “With this in mind, our newest parking structure incorporates the same attributes that are so important in our terminal facilities: seamless access, innovative features, sustainable design, and inspirational public artwork. We are grateful to be recognized by the International Parking & Mobility Institute for our efforts.”

The garage was constructed to achieve Parksmart gold certification, designed and built to be over 20 percent electric-vehicle charging capable, with 3 percent of the parking stalls providing charging stations at the facility’s opening. Solar panels cover the roof, creating a net-energy-positive system that powers the garage and additional SFO facilities. A lighting control system reduces energy consumption and can be operated remotely to adjust energy consumption for the garage’s elevators and electrical and mechanical systems. A pedestrian and vehicle bridge connects the garage to the adjacent existing parking structure, and the new garage has been designed to directly connect to the future AirTrain station and future consolidated rental car facility.

Design and construction of the SFO Long-Term Parking Garage began in early 2016. The project team included Nibbi Brothers Associates, Inc., design-builder Kwan-Henmi/FMC/Watry-Buehler Collaborative architects/designers and The Allen Group/Cooper Pugeda Management, Inc., JV as project management support services, as well as SFO Parking Management with New South Parking, Inc., and other SFO stakeholders who were instrumental in delivering the project. The team’s exemplary performance highlights the Airport’s standard of doing business to deliver exceptional projects within a structured collaborative partnering environment. The project was completed under budget, and the facility opened ahead of schedule.
