SFO’s Harvey Milk Terminal 1 has earned the Fitwel “Best in Building Health® 2021” award from the Center for Active Design. Fitwel is a building rating system that provides guidelines on how to design, construct, and operate healthier buildings. In the Retail v2.1 category, SFO and the Design-Build team of Hensel Phelps, A Gensler / Kuth Ranieri Joint Venture won the design award for the Terminal 1 Center project, part of the $2.4B Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Redevelopment Program.

“Harvey Milk Terminal 1 was designed with the health of both our passengers and employees in mind,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “Achieving Fitwel certification for this terminal – a first in the world – helped us to establish a new benchmark for the airport experience. We thank the Center for Active Design for supporting our design efforts, and for this latest recognition.”

Created as a joint initiative led by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) together with the General Services Administration (GSA), Fitwel provides guidelines for designing, constructing, and operating healthier buildings.  The criteria for certification involve 63 evidence-backed strategies that have proven to increase the health and well-being of building occupants, including building access, indoor environments, and water supply. SFO’s score included access to public transit, a safe infrastructure for pedestrians, indoor air quality policies and testing, access to lactation rooms, and access to free water supplies.

Fast Company, the world’s leading business media brand, recently named SFO on its list of Most Innovative Companies for 2021. In the “travel” category, SFO was honored for the healthy, human-centric design of Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

The construction of Harvey Milk Terminal 1 is divided into two projects: Boarding Area B (BAB) and Terminal 1 Center (T1C).
