Singapore Airlines (SIA) has launched its AppChallenge for 2020, the sixth time the successful program has been run. The AppChallenge is an opportunity for startups at the forefront of innovation to work with the world’s leading airline and be part of the driving force in changing the way we travel.

This year, Singapore Airlines is in search of start-ups with the most innovative solutions to ten Problem Statements across six Challenge Themes, including “Travelling in the New Norm”, “Sustainability” and “Seamless Travel Experience”.

Applications are open until 12 July 2020, after which finalists will be invited to pitch to Singapore Airlines senior management and top executives. Solutions with business potential will be fast-tracked into the SIA Accelerator Programme, where start-ups will build a Proof-of-Concept of their solution with the Airline.

Singapore Airlines’ Regional Vice President Southwest Pacific, Mr Philip Goh, said that this year’s AppChallenge provides a unique opportunity given the effect of Covid-19 on the aviation industry.

“The ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the travel industry and aviation sector in particular have forced many businesses to consider creative and innovative ideas that can support the recovery and shape the travel experience of the future,” Mr Goh said.

“At Singapore Airlines we take pride in striving to be the world’s leading digital airline, and the AppChallenge is a perfect opportunity to continue to engage with start-ups to develop fresh ideas and work towards solutions to some of the key challenges facing not just us, but the aviation industry as a whole.”

Up to five start-ups from the Grand Finale round will have the implementation of their solutions fast tracked through the SIA Accelerator Programme, which includes:

  • 10-week programme to implement the start-up’s solution through a proof-of-concept
  • Dedicated SIA business mentor and National University of Singapore advisor to co-develop the solution
  • Access to Singapore Airlines and key partners’ application programming interfaces (APIs)
  • Workspace and facilities at Singapore Airlines’ Digital Innovation Lab, KrisLab
  • Funding support

Roadshows are being held virtually to provide further information on the AppChallenge, as well as to provide an opportunity to hear from previous finalists.
