Social media entices Australians to visit new destinations

As the role of social media in travel becomes more understood, new research from online travel insurance provider InsureandGo has uncovered its influence in choosing a holiday destination[1].

The survey of over 3,100 Australians found that one in 10 (11%) respondents had travelled to a particular destination because of social media, with Asia the most popular destination (33%), followed by Europe (19%) and the USA (18%).

“Social media has become a powerful tool for travellers to uncover new and exciting destinations that they may not have previously known about. As more travellers are documenting their holidays through social media, it’s only natural that they’re inspiring others to see new destinations,” said Jonathan Etkind, Head of Sales, Digital & Marketing of InsureandGo.

Social media was particularly influential with millennials, with one in four (24%) millennials saying that social media influenced their choice of holiday destination and 28% of millennials saying that they had been to a destination solely to take a selfie.

“Many millennials are lovers of all things social media so it’s no surprise to see that it plays an important role in choosing a holiday destination. What’s interesting though is that more than one in four millennials visited a destination simply to take a selfie, showing their love of taking part in shareable holidays,” said Mr Etkind.

The survey also found that millennials are twice as likely as baby boomers (28% vs 14%) to lose or damage their phone or camera while travelling, suggesting that younger travellers are less cautious with their belongings.

“There’s nothing worse than having an incident while travelling, such as having your camera or phone lost or damaged and potentially losing those precious holiday shots. This is one reason why it’s important that travellers of all ages purchase travel insurance with coverage for cameras and mobile phones. With the right policy and level of cover, travel insurance may be able to reimburse travellers for lost or stolen belongings up to a certain amount.

“What many travellers may not know is that there are simple ways to help insurance companies process claims quicker. For example, before you head off on holidays record your IMEI number so that if your phone is lost or stolen, not only will your insurance company speed through this part of your paperwork, you can also get your phone locked and in some cases even found,” said Mr Etkind.

IMEI numbers are a unique 15-digit code that identifies a phone and can be retrieved by pressing * # 0 6 # and then calling.

“While it may be fun to document your travels on social media, be mindful of the fact that you’re letting people know that you’re away and that your house may be unattended. If you can, ask friends or family to house sit or check in on your home while you’re away as those who still live at home are often happy for a mini-break themselves,” said Mr Etkind.

With 1.6 million travellers covered a year through InsureandGo, many of its policies offer protection up to an agreed amount for lost or damaged belongings such as phones or cameras. InsureandGo has a range of policies to suit many holidays, with backpackers, cruise and domestic specific policies.
