Spartan H3X was held on 3 October at Sam Pak Beach, Discovery Bay. This H3X challenge was held simultaneously in six regions around the globe, including Hong Kong, China, the Philippines, USA, Austria and Slovakia.

Spartan H3X is a test of the participants’ body and mind. In 4 hour, 12 hour and 24 hour windows, participants are challenged to understand the missions set by their instructors (known as Krypteia), and overcome a variety of obstacles testing their physical strength, perseverance and intelligence.

All 24 participants successfully finished the Hurricane Heat tier one challenge, a 4-hour trial tasking teams with solving nonlinear problems and overcoming physical endurance tests. 13 participants proceeded to contest the tier two Hurricane Heat 12-hour challenge, with 10 of them successfully completing the challenge. Four then decided to move onto the final tier, Hurricane Heat 24-Hour test, the ultimate endurance challenge.

All four finishers were able to conquer the 24-hour physical and mental challenge: Robin Sung-yip Lo, Ellen Hai-yee Lun, Melvin James and Rami Hage Ali.

The event kicked off at 8:00am on Saturday in Hong Kong, with excellent conditions for the unique endurance challenge like H3X.

Mr. Gary Wan, Managing Director of race organizer Hybrid Group Limited said, “We are delighted to have successfully held our first event of 2020, in association with five other Spartan H3X events worldwide. Given the challenges of this unique year, I would like to congratulate all Spartans for their strong performance and proving that you cannot quarantine the drive to push yourself to new heights.

“A very special congratulations go to the four local Spartans that conquered the Hurricane Heat 24-Hour challenge, it is a huge testament to their physical and mental strength and a great example of the importance of a positive mindset and active lifestyle during a time like this,” added Mr. Maximilian Lai, Race Director of Spartan Race HK and Lead Krypteia of H3X.

As an example of some of the imposing physical and mental tests the participants underwent, Hurricane Heat 4-Hour participants had to carry sandbags and climb over and under their teammates who were doing planks. In the Hurricane Heat 12 Hour, one of the individual tasks was to run around a 1.5km loop with a sandbag (25kg for male, 18kg for female) for over 2.5hr, but only after completing 30 Burpees.

The difficulty increased in the Hurricane Heat 24-Hour, with participants pushed to the physical brink by doing more running in weighted rucksacks, before having to take a memory test, being asked to remember and recognise 36 symbols that are located 1.5km from the base camp.  Participants will have to run back and forth as many times as possible until they can replicate all the symbols in the exact order at base camp.
