WE’VE a query for Steve Rosa, head honcho at NSW’s Destination Southern Highlands, and the rest of his merry little tourism team.

And our query is this: we know that through this month of June you’re encouraging folk to descend on your local Highlands’ bakeries, patisseries, cafés, pubs, clubs, cellar doors and anywhere else to get stuck into a great pie or two during your now-cooler days and nights, and in what you have re-dubbed as June Pie Time.

 

But whilst you are savouring this year’s many wondrous baked creations what, we ask, have you got in the offing for June of next year, and even 2020 and beyond?

Because on a recent swing through Europe and the UK to seek-out more of the weird, wacky and wondrous to write about in this column, we came across a meat pie in Switzerland that we’re sure would leave you and your team, like ourselves, somewhat gobsmacked.

For this extraordinary piece was made at Switzerland’s hotel management school Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne, and weighed-in at a mind-boggling 86.75kg – or 191 pounds, earning itself the World Record Academy’s citation of World’s Largest One Piece Meat Pie.

Created with a pastry base filled with beef, pork, bacon, garlic, onions and red wine, and then capped with a one-piece pastry topping measuring 160cm by 78cm and 11cm thick (that’s 5ft 3ins by 2ft 7ins by 4.5ins,) this Swiss record-breaker took a whopping 40 hours to bake to a crispy, golden finish.

And after being dutifully shown off when out of the oven, it was cut up and given away to the needy and homeless.

So we ask of Steve Rosa, do you reckon your Southern Highlands could be up to the challenge of beating this World’s Largest One-Piece Meat Pie in your 2019 June Pie Time?
