Viviana Maier is an Argentinian born artist who has perfected the art of melding sculpture and functional form to create contemporary everyday ceramics.
Originally drawing on inspiration from her native South America rainforest trees, leaves and flowers, then, after moving to Western Australia in 2007, drawing on the every changing Indian Ocean, her delicate, almost transparent pieces exhibit a quiet poise and sophistication.
Her passion for ceramics began in her teenage years when she visited a university expo and absolutely felt in love with clay, and it became her life’s work. She then studies Ceramics at the University of Art in Argentina, before opening her first studio in 1995, Argentina
Her works are beautifully executed and begin on the pottery wheel, shaping and creating pieces from the finest slip-cast porcelain for a soft translucency. The glazes are amazingly tactile with a compelling gentleness to the touch and range from a soft, subtleness, which blend beautifully with the organic forms to bolder colours, patterns and different surface treatments. They are then fired at a very high temperature 1300OC to give a very strong, non-porous finish, which can be enjoyed every day.
