The local Whitsundays community and Daydream Island’s loyal fans can rejoice, as the iconic mermaids are set to come alive in 2019 with the announcement of a national art competition to create a tribute to our most loved Island statues.

After sustaining significant damage during Cyclone Debbie in 2017, Daydream Island and the local community lamented the loss of their iconic mermaids; Serenity, Aphrodesia and Infinity. After a resounding appeal to bring them back, Daydream Island are elated to announce the mermaids will again be making their mark through a temporary installation when the resort reopens in 2019.

Daydream Island will be launching a national art competition, calling upon Australian artists to submit a concept of their choice paying homage to Daydream Island’s beloved mermaids. From the concepts selected, each will showcase a new age art impression of the mermaids, from a street artist mural or the possible inception of a ‘mer-man’, participants are encouraged to exude creativity!

From the concepts submitted, three finalists will be selected through a poll via Daydream Island’s social channels. Winners will then be commissioned to create their concept for the island, each with a unique flair paying ode to the mermaids.

Daydream Island’s Director of Sales & Marketing, Jayson Heron said, “The Whitsundays is becoming a destination for art and design most recently with the Tourism Whitsundays Art Project. We are encouraging emerging artists to get involved, make a splash on the scene and recreate our iconic mermaids who play a cherished role in the island’s identity”.

This exciting competition is open to all emerging and established Australian artists. The competition will launch in December 2018, with finalists announced in January 2019 and the three final mermaid artworks to be unveiled in March 2019.
