Captain Cook Cruises Fiji has partnered with Kiwi Air hostess Cassy Appleton and Fijian local, Maraia Vavaitamana, to successfully distribute over 1,000 bras to Fijian women in the Mamanuca Islands who are unable to afford or access good quality and well-fitting bras.

Miss Appleton, a Cabin Supervisor for Virgin Australia, began a nationwide campaign in New Zealand asking women to donate their bras, after discovering Fijian women, especially those in rural areas were unable to easily purchase or have any access to bras.

According to Miss Appleton, “It was during one of my trips to Fiji that I discovered the plight faced by women in Fiji and learned that good quality, well-fitting bras are both difficult and expensive for local women to access, especially those in rural areas.”

“The women of New Zealand really got behind my campaign and over 1,000 bras have been donated.” Continues Miss Appleton.

Miss Appleton’s employers, Virgin Australia also supported the campaign, transporting the bras to Fiji for distribution.

On their arrival in Fiji, Captain Cook Cruises Fiji provided assistance and logistical support, distributing the bras to women in the villages of Yanuya and Yalobi, when they stopped at these Islands in the Mamanuca as part of their regular MV Reef Endeavour cruise itinerary.

150 women from the village of Yanuya and 70 women from the village of Yalobi were given five bras each.

According to Captain Cook Cruises Fiji General Manager, Tony Acland, “Captain Cook Cruises were more than happy to be involved in this great initiative. We believe this is a very important issue for women and all women should have access to bras. We wanted to show our support for Pinktober and the women of Fiji, especially those in the Mamanuca’s.”
