The Legacy Of “Helena” A Finalist In The 2018 Bacardi® Legacy Singapore Finals

Inspired by the strength and resilience of the Bacardi family through difficult times, Martin Villareal, resident mixologist at Chihuly Lounge, has created “Helena”. This rum cocktail named after his mother, seeks to inspire through Martin’s personal family story of optimism and courage despite adversity.

Passionate about bartending, Martin has been with The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore since 2011. His cocktail creation, “Helena” has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2018 BACARDI® Legacy Singapore Finals. After taking three months to perfect the recipe for the competition, Martin decided to name the cocktail “Helena”, after his mother. Living up to the true meaning of her name, which means “bright, shining light”, Helena was the optimism and glue that held the family together during several bouts of malady which afflicted various family members, before succumbing to her own illness.

“I wanted to create a drink that will inspire people. Through Helena, I hope to honour my mom’s legacy by sharing her personal story of light and hope,” said Martin.

Bacardi 8 Reserve was chosen as the base of the cocktail. Aged for more than eight years in handpicked oak barrels, the Bacardi 8 Reserve features notes of prunes, apricots, nutmeg and vanilla, blended to give a smooth and rich taste with a long finish. Lillet Blanc, a French aromatised wine adds dryness, depth and complexity to the drink, while honey ginger cinnamon syrup and lemon juice are added to give acidity, balance and a citrus aroma with ginger aftertaste. Three drops of Peychaud’s bitters are incorporated for aroma and colour, resulting in a harmonious blend of sweet, sour and spice flavour profiles. The cocktail is garnished with an orange twist for a zest of freshness.

“Helena” is priced at SGD 18 and is available at Chihuly Lounge, located on Level Three of The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.



Bacardi 8 Reserve                               40ml

Lillet Blanc                                         15ml

Honey Ginger Cinnamon Syrup         20ml

Fresh Lemon Juice                              20ml

Peychaud’s Bitters                              3 dashes


  1. Chill coupette glass
  2. Add Peychaud’s Bitters, lemon juice, honey ginger cinnamon syrup, Lillet Blanc and Bacardi 8 Reserve to cocktail shaker.
  3. Add ice and shake well.
  4. Double strain into chilled coupette glass, then garnish with orange twist.
