We’re living in a fast-paced world. In the business scene, it’s survival of the fittest. Qualifying as one of the fittest and staying on track requires entrepreneurs and employees to maintain their energy levels, enthusiasm, and innovation. It also requires business smarts beyond simply understanding the ins and outs of the business world.

You have to have adaptability and remain poised for change and prepared to pivot in order to stay relevant. When trouble hits, like, for example, a global pandemic that sees most of the markets shut down for a time, an entrepreneur’s ability to use adversity as a step towards success, is the best survival strategy there is.

As a society, we praise those that manage to use their struggles to spur on their success without truly understanding what goes into that. The ability to use a challenge as a tool to leverage new achievements isn’t a mythical superpower. It’s not about luck (although it sometimes looks like it from the outside).

Anyone can do this since we all experience hardships and challenges and these form the basis of success.

The Fall from Grace: When a Lack of Self-Parenting Takes its Toll

Self-parenting involves doing everything for yourself that nurturing parents do for their children: Adhering to a healthy sleep routine, eating a balanced diet that contains nourishing foods, avoiding destructive behaviours and observing a happy work/life balance.

When we are overwhelmed, it’s easy to forget to self-parent ourselves and turn to over-working, under-working, and missing that crucial balance. But self-parenting through struggles, especially in business, is the key to success. Realise that by using those comfort mechanisms, we are actually bringing about a distance between ourselves and the problem in order to regain a sense of comfort. When you can replace those habits with healthier ones, we are able to respond to the challenge instead of reacting to it. Responding to a problem means rising to the challenge and finding solutions.

A local self-starter, Raimond Volpe, has first-hand experience having navigated the process of leaving behind toxic lifestyle habits that led him to overwork to the point of complete burnout. His solution to problems involved giving more of himself than he had available until he was completely depleted.

Down and out: An Ideal Environment for Introspection

During his time of reflection, Raimond wrote a bestseller book about what he learned during that difficult time. Where many have been unable to trade, his business Dynamo Selling stepped up and won a coveted international award for innovation during these challenging economic times. Raimond said sometimes you hit rock bottom so you can propel yourself upwards, to new beginnings.

“During a pandemic, many people are sitting at home and experiencing the rock bottom, wondering how, or even if, they can propel themselves upwards,” he said.

“We survived this year because we kept innovating. Winning a Stevie Award Asia Pacific for innovation in customer service management in 2020 is great recognition for our success.

Dynamo Selling: The Rise of a New Dawn

Dynamo Selling also changed the markets targeted, seeking out industries that were growing through the pandemic such as health services such as psychology, also technology and home services and supporting them with sales skills. Also did one one one coaching where people reached out for communication and development skills.

“My life crisis gave me space to reflect on success. Working to a schedule to meet targets can often lead to burnout. What is the point in schooling people on sales if it simply commits them to this lifestyle?” he asks.

“We won an award for a sales training platform that’s motivating. It teaches salespeople how to harness their anxiety and stress and turn it into their driving force to success.

“How to alter their behaviour, adjust their mindset, and use words alongside body language to inspire trust in others, earn their respect, and handle a workload without becoming stressed out.
