Whether it’s hiding undercover from the rain, falling asleep to the sounds of the nearby jungle, or waking up to the misty morning air, there’s always something special about a night’s stay in the middle of nature. That’s why the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched a new “One Night Stay with Locals” project, offering you the unique chance to escape the crowds and soak up the local culture at a range of handpicked communities and villages throughout the country.
1 Night Stay with Locals
As part of this launch, a new website is now live which contains details and information about all 13 of the destinations, as well as trip itineraries, special prices and a booking function. This can be found at 1nightstaywithlocals.com.
From remote northern provinces in Thailand, such as Nan and Chiang Rai, to areas a little closer to Bangkok like Petchaburi and Trat – not forgetting some of country’s most famous southern seaside locations including Phang Nga and Chumphon, here are the 13 communities that have been selected for the TAT’s “One Night Stay with Locals” project:

- Pangha Homestay Community (Chiang Rai)
- Sila Petch Community (Nan)
- Pa Miang Community (Lampang)
- Phrom Lok Community (Nakorn Si Thammarat)
- Baan Sam Chong Nuea Community (Phang Nga)
- Bang Son Community (Chumphon)
- Tamod Community (Phatthalung)
- Chulaporn Pattana 9 Tourism Community (Yala)
- Bo Hin Farmstay Community (Trang)
- Baan Laem Pak Bia (Petchaburi)
- Baan Laem Klat Community (Trat)
- Baan Khiri Wong Kot (Udon Thani)
These homestay experiences offer a wide range of community-focused activities, such as helping to preserve the surrounding environment, following scenic tour routes with expert guides, as well as picking up some new skills and wisdom from local farmers and craftsmen.
For instance, you’ll meet and discover the centuries-old traditions of the Tai Lue people at Chiang Rai’s Pangha Homestay, go miang leaf-collecting to make tasty snacks with the villagers of Baan Pa Miang in Lampang, and discover the solitary fisherman’s way of life while staying on a farm at Bo Hin Community, Trang.
Another select destination, Bang Son, proves there’s much more to Thailand’s Chumphon province than just Koh Samui as you explore the idyllic network of inshore streams, while a trip up to Baan Khiri Wong Kot offers the chance to discover the true essence of northeast Thailand, with tractor adventures, fruit picking and lots of tasty Isaan food!
These carefully curated “Extraordinary Experiences” are suitable for most types of traveller, especially those who are interested in sustainable tourism and gaining more memorable, educational experiences from their trip. Bookings can be made for between 2 and 10 people (subject to each homestay) all year round, with the project aimed at both Thai and foreign visitors to the country.
