Spread the love

If you’re familiar with Yokohama, Japan’s second largest city and capital of Kanagawa, then you’ll know that Minato Mirai and China Town (one of the largest in the world) dominate Google search results for “things to do and see”.

This spectacular port city with its stunning skyline has become a popular dating spot amongst Japanese locals and like any major city, there are hidden gems waiting to be uncovered, one of them being a charming Yokohama neighbourhood called Noge.

Noge’s history dates back to post-war Japan, where it was lined with over 400 shops making it the original centre of entertainment in Yokohama. Today it retains its historical charm and whether you’re a first time or frequent visitor to Japan, Noge offers an atmosphere that’ll keep you entertained late into the night.

Eat your heart out

The Noge Shopping Street is lined and tightly packed with a variety of small eateries including traditional and modern restaurants, jazz cafes and casual Japanese style pubs known as “Izakaya” all of which are reasonably priced. Here you can purchase special cash vouchers called “Noge-Tegata” for 1,500 yen (about $20 AUD). These can be used at over 70 shops to purchase set menu items. For information on how to purchase a voucher and to explore restaurants that accept Noge-Tegata, visit http://noge-tegata.com/english/shop

Turn back time in Yokohama’s jazz hub

Aside from the variety of food, Noge is home to a thriving jazz scene and one of the oldest jazz cafes “Chigusa” is located in this area. Chigusa is the mecca of Jazz culture in Japan, with a rich history that extends well before the war. After being destroyed during the war, it was rebuilt in 1946 and continues to spread musical vibes to this day. Come prepared for a great time, as they take requests!

Dance in the street

Sometimes the music of Yokohama’s jazz hub can spill onto the street with events such as the Yokohama Jazz Promenade in October, or the Noge Jazz de Bon Odori in September. During these events, the streets overflow with music, creating an incredibly vibrant and fun atmosphere. There is also the Noge Grand Street Performance every spring and autumn, which is overwhelmingly popular amongst locals and tourists alike. These events encourage audience participation, giving you the chance to dance and celebrate with locals!

Regardless of the season, a night out in Noge will be sure to sooth your soul and enrich your overall experience of visiting Japan!
