No matter how luxurious or exotic your destination is, travelling when you’re sick is no fun. With the arrival of flu season, it’s time to give your travel plans some careful thought and consider travel insurance from Allianz to protect your trip investment.

Depending on your travel insurance plan and provider, you may be eligible for trip cancellation if you (or one of your travel companions) contract the flu and your doctor advises you against traveling – just be sure to get a note.

And while certain medical conditions and emergencies may be grounds for trip cancellation, you’ll want to take a close look at your letter of confirmation to see what can be covered and what cannot, especially if you have a pre-existing condition. In that case, you’ll need to be medically cleared to travel on the day you purchase your travel insurance policy and meet some other conditions laid out here: https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/travel/medical/existing-medical-conditions-coverage.htm.

If you come down a bug while travelling, a plan with trip interruption benefits can reimburse you for not only the unused portion of your trip, less any refunds, but also the extra costs of making new travel arrangements.

“Two years ago, my niece was visiting from China with her new husband. They were hosting a wedding reception for our extended family and friends in her hometown of Chattanooga, TN. My family and I were going to be traveling from Raleigh, NC to participate in the festivities. A few days before departure, my 6-year-old grandson came down with the flu. It was a terrible flu season and our vaccines didn’t provide us any relief. One by one, the entire family went down with the illness. I called Allianz and shared what had happened and provided the physician’s note about my grandson. Out of the seven of us traveling, four were not well enough to make the trip. Four airline tickets is a pretty significant investment. Allianz reimbursed us for each of those tickets. Luckily, we were able to cancel our hotel rooms free of charge. I began purchasing travel insurance from Allianz about four years ago when I started doing more family travel. This is the second time that the insurance has been a lifesaver. My first experience using Allianz was on a trip with my sister to Hawaii several years ago and my bags never made the connection. I will continue to purchase this coverage for every trip that I take.” – Martina Christie, North Carolina
