Trump’s alleged vulgarity comes back to haunt hotel

January 17, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

A naughty word which President Donald Trump claims he didn’t use has come back to haunt him, being projected onto the frontage of one of his prime hotel properties, as well as spurring demonstrations in the US.

The president is alleged to have used the term “shithole countries” to describe African nations, along with Haiti and El Salvador.

Now the s-word has been projected onto Trump’s hotel in Washington DC in a light show and sent around the world on social media.

Trump is accused of saying, in an Oval Office discussion on immigration: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” before suggesting that the US should bring in more immigrants from countries like Norway.

The African Union, representing all 55 African countries is demanding that Trump, the only hotel magnate ever to be elected to the White House, apologise for the remarks.

While Trump detractors claim the term is racist, Trump says he didn’t even use the term and news outlets admit that “it depends who you ask”.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term as vulgar slang and says it means: “An extremely dirty, shabby, or otherwise unpleasant place.” The dictionary even gives an example of its use: “This place is a shithole. I hope you know that.”

Paul Danahar, editor of the BBC’s North America bureau, tweeted: “We have dozens of language services at the BBC which today are all discussing the right way to translate into their own language the word ‘shithole’ for their millions of listeners.”

Anyone else can look at my much more tasteful photo of Sydney Harbour Bridge, below, which I took on New Year’s Eve after the midnight fireworks ended!
