Two planes collide and one burns at Toronto airport

Screams of panic can be heard in a video shot aboard a plane that had just landed at Toronto’s Pearson Airport, after a collision, fire and near disaster in Arctic-like sub-zero temperatures.

Disaster and injury were averted and all passengers were evacuated and are safe.

WestJet airlines had to evacuate its B737-800 carrying 168 passengers and six crew via emergency slides. The flight had just arrived from sunny Cancun in Mexico and was bringing holidaymakers home to Toronto, where temperatures had dived to  minus 21 C.

As the WestJet plane waited stationary on the tarmac after landing, an empty Sunwing aircraft apparently struck it while pushing back from a gate. The tail of the Sunwing aircraft then burst into flames and smoke, causing consternation on the Westjet plane.

A passenger, Stephen Belford, posted the video below.

“It’s not our plane on fire, it’s the other plane,” a voice calls out in a bid to calm the situation.

WestJet said on Twitter: “Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide.” Everyone got off the plane safely and without injury.

Sunwing said its ground handling service provider was towing its plane at the time and nobody was aboard the aircraft.

MEANWHILE, something similar, but without the fire, happened at New York JFK airport at the weekend when the right wing of a China Southern plane hit the tail of a Kuwait Airways plane. There was damage but no-one was hurt. Both planes were B777s.

Kuwait Airways tweeted that the China Southern aircraft struck its flight 118 from New York to Kuwait as it was parked before takeoff.
