URBNSURF Melbourne, Australia’s first surf park located just minutes from Melbourne Airport, has this month announced it has secured a three-year strategic partnership with Surfing Victoria, the state organising body for surfing, ahead of the surf park’s much anticipated public opening in January 2020.

The partnership will see Surfing Victoria deliver ongoing training to URBNSURF’s coaches and staff, advise on the surf park’s Surfing Academy, boardriders club and competitions, as  well as assist with broader education and advocacy.

“We’re pumped to be in partnership with URBNSURF Melbourne,” said Adam Robertson,  CEO of Surfing Victoria.   “The inclusive nature of what URBNSURF is aiming to achieve with the surf park – to open the sport up to all ages and abilities – complements Surfing Victoria’s purpose of enriching Victorian communities through surfing,” he added.

The partnership was officially unveiled as part of URBNSURF Melbourne’s first waves being  turned on and surfed at the park earlier this month. The rising stars of Victorian surfing joined Australian surfing champions and Team Australia members Sally Fitzgibbons and Julian Wilson to be amongst the first to experience the perfect surfing conditions set to be on offer to the public in Tullamarine come January.

“It’s a monumental alignment between URBNSURF Melbourne and Surfing Victoria, which  will be critical to the education and development of our staff, coaches and lifeguards as well as in establishing our learn to surf programs so that we can equip people of all ages and abilities with the skills and knowledge to surf more,” said Andrew Ross, Founder of URBNSURF.

Shaped like a baseball diamond, URBNSURF Melbourne’s two-hectare surfing lagoon (similar in size to the MCG) offers both left and right breaks. Capable of accommodating surfers of all ages and abilities simultaneously across multiple surfing zones, the innovative sports and leisure venue will be open day and night, year-round.

Guests can choose to “freesurf” in URBNSURF Melbourne’s beginner, intermediate or  advanced surfing zones in one-hour surf sessions, or learn to surf as part of a structured one-hour and 45-minute lesson. Inaugural memberships are on sale now via URBNSURF.com, with “multipacks” of surf sessions and lessons, and gift cards to be released prior to Christmas.

Surfing Victoria is recognised by the State Government of Victoria and the Victorian surf industry as the governing and organising body for surfing in Victoria. Surfing Victoria  conducts a range of age and discipline events, as well as educational programs to coaches, instructors, recreational surfers and competitors.
