US releases latest arrival figures from Australia

February 9, 2018 Headline News No Comments Email Email

Latest official tourism arrival figures from the US (issued yesterday by the US Department of Commerce and covering the month of July 2017) show arrivals from Australia fell by -2.6% in that month – though the tide may be turning.

Monthly arrival figures from Australia in 2017 have generally been in the negative, with the worst being February, which was -12.1% down.

The running total is -3.3% down, for the year 2017 up to and including July.

For comparison, worldwide visitor arrivals in the US are running -4% down over the same period, and total overseas arrivals are -6.4% down

The US Department of Commerce forecasts that final arrival figures from Australia for 2017 will be -2% down on the previous year. That indicates the downward trend is slowing, as visits from Australia to the US declined by -7% in 2016.

The official US forecast for this year (2018) is a 4% increase over 2017, with the following three years showing 3% increases in visitation from Australia, year on year.

The US remains top on the travel wish list for Australians, apparently, one of several seemingly contradictory signals regarding travel to the US that are puzzling the market. See: What’s going on with Australian travel to the US?
