The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) today congratulates Melbourne Airport on 50 years of operation and commends the airport on its continued success and reputation as the premium gateway for visitors to Victoria.
VTIC Chief Executive Felicia Mariani applauded Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lyell Strambi and the team on the milestone and reflected on the airport’s impressive journey and growth over the decades.
“Melbourne Airport’s journey is exceptional. To think that the airport has grown from six carriers at its genesis, to today welcoming 40 carriers to our amazing city, is remarkable.”
Pre COVID-19, on an average day, around 100,000 people would pass through the airport – and last financial year, the airport welcomed just over 37 million visitors to the state.
“The numbers speak for themselves. By the end of last year, 45 destinations around the world were serviced with non-stop flights from Melbourne Airport. The airport’s ‘curfew-free’ positioning has helped us gain traction with global carriers seeking a preeminent entry point into Australia.
“Melbourne Airport has consistently raised the bar on delivering a superior customer experience and its central role in attracting visitors to Victoria has been vital to our success as a destination.
“Melbourne Airport has been a long-standing member and valued partner of VTIC. We look forward to our continued collaboration, working together to ensure Victoria’s visitor economy is supported through the COVID-19 crisis and beyond,” Ms Mariani said.
