What can be more fun than a weekend outdoors, camping under the stars. If you’re a Melbourne resident or visiting from out of state, there are some incredible camping spots not far from the big smoke that must be explored.

Roll up the tent and pack the repellent, because we’re dishing out the most popular and secret camping destinations near Melbourne.

Phillip Island

There is so much to love about Phillip Island, and Newhaven Beach is one of those loves. You can free camp in Phillip Island, or enjoy the structure of Newhaven Caravan Park which is the best of both worlds. Boasting close proximity to the beach, Phillip Island offers the perfect backdrop for beach sport and water experiences. If you bring your camping gear at the right time of the year, you may even be able to witness the Penguin Parade that is famous around the world.

Wilsons Promontory

Wilsons Promontory needs no introduction, but perhaps you are not acquainted with the two camping spots that pull crowds year round. Yanakie Campgrounds and Tidal River Campgrounds are enjoyed by new and experienced campers, far out enough to get some clarity but close enough to civilisation that one can feel supported. Yanakie Campgrounds is especially beautiful because campers are pitching a tent on the sand, rising and retreating to the sound of waves crashing close by. Tidal River Campgrounds is also near a body of water, with the calm river a welcome sight after the windy drive to the campground. Tidal River Campgrounds are fitted with those camping must-haves like bathroom blocks and BBQ areas, making it hot property in the warmer months.

Great Ocean Road

You would be forgiven for thinking that the Great Ocean Road can only be experienced by car. There are some incredible camping grounds that litter the Great Ocean Road, which means the iconic views can be experienced day in and day out for those campers who seek it. Marengo Holiday Park is a short distance from the beach and the site offers a range of options for campers who like to rough it or prefer the comfort of a cabin. Johanna Beach, as the name suggests, sees campers pitching a tent within the sand dunes. You won’t need to go far for a bath each morning, with nature’s greatest asset right before your tent.

You can’t experience Gippsland without a trip to Cape Conran. The region has several campgrounds, some of which are so sought after that at some points in the year campers need to enter a ballot to be able to camp in that area. The beach, while incredible, is not the only wonder when camping. Campers can also rock climb, hike and take part in some experiences during their stay.

Otway National Park

The beauty of Otway National Park is experienced by millions each year. And yet? It can often feel like the park is entirely yours, so vast and dense in its natural beauty. Of the many beautiful pockets of Otway National Park, Blanket Bay and Aire River Camp Area are destinations that you will want to visit if you are an avid camper. Blanket Bay is a preferred spot for those who are interested in extreme sports, offering hiking and bushwalking. It’s also a favourite family camping spot due to the wildlife that wander within the campgrounds, and the many koalas to spot in the trees. Aire River Camp Area is a more basic setup, which suits the campers who look for a more natural and removed camping experience. Plus, there is more than enough to distract the campers with the surrounding beauty.

Don’t let it take a whole lifetime to explore these incredible camping spots, and look to plan an outdoors getaway when you favourite season hits. Whether it’s beachside beauty or back to basics bushland – you will find it close to Melbourne.
