The German capital of Art Nouveau: Darmstadt

You may have heard Darmstadt and Mathildenhöhe, its famous former artists’ colony, referred to as Germany’s “City of Art Nouveau”. But did you know that Darmstadt and its immediate surroundings are home to exciting and hidden gems including Hotel Jagdschloss Kranichstein (a former hunting lodge) and the inimitable Grube Messel (Messel Pit Fossil Site)? The city is rapidly evolving and has become a good alternative to Frankfurt for overnight stays, especially since it’s situated so close by. Darmstadt is well worth discovering and will certainly capture your imagination. An artists’ colony was established at Mathildenhöhe in 1899 and was a center for art and exhibitions until 1914. Today, it is considered one of the most important Art Nouveau treasures in Germany. The Mathildenhöhe app guides you through the history and development of this special place – a truly unique experience.

Lauresham digital – an open-air laboratory for experimental archaeology

Lorsch Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is no ordinary abbey. Established in 764, it was subsequently declared the most important imperial abbey by Charlemagne. Today, the abbey, its museum, and the beautiful surroundings are well worth a visit. Lauresham open-air laboratory is involved in several important research projects. Visitors can travel back in time in a 1:1 scale model of a Carolingian manor farm from around 800 AD. In response to the current situation, the laboratory has launched a project to produce videos of the progress of their exciting research projects. The first one (in German with English subtitles) is already available on YouTube: The “Ridge and furrow research project” revisits farming in the Early Middle Ages. So buckle up, there is a lot of time travel to be done!
