Spread the love

During these last challenging months, the Degas House has had several very bright moments to share with you! On a recent afternoon, an unexpected entourage stopped here to take a few photos of the House and front garden beds.Although this happens frequently, this family had a surprise for us, their lovely 16 year old ballet dancer, Jolie Rose Lombardo, who is currently studying ballet in Germany. I hope you enjoy these amazing photos, appropriately taken here, in front of the home of the “Painter of Dancers”!

Maisons des Illustres distinction awarded by the French Ambassador to the United States, Philippe Etienne:

What a difference a year makes, as last year we were waiting for the Ambassador’s visit, to present the French Ministry of Culture’s Maisons des Illustres Award, which now includes Degas House into the network of 236 properties around the world, and includes the homes of such luminaries as
Napoleon, Joan d’Arc, Ravel, Monet, Renoir, Madame Curie, Jacques Cartier and many more distinguished French men and women. The Ambassador visited us and, in a ceremony here at the Degas House on July 15th, surrounded by roughly 200 attendees, many of whom are active in our French Community here, along with members of the media, presented the new marker, designating Degas House  as an official French Landmark House, only the 2nd in the U.S. and only the 4th
outside of France and the French territories.

Yes, the Degas House closed its doors on March 17th and has been closed to visitors ever since, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Luckily, this week, Degas’ Great Grand-Niece, Joanie Prados has returned to us and will begin doing tours shortly, although visitor traffic is not expected to return until the Fall.
