What do you call a little koala joey who popped out of his mother’s pouch early to meet and greet his guests? Buddy. Literally. With the help of the Australia, Wild Life Sydney Zoo is delighted to announce ‘Buddy’ as the name of their newest furry arrival.

The decision of what to name the new koala joey was put to the public last Friday, and received a total of 150 entries from Wild Life guests and Facebook fans. Whilst ‘Bernard’ was the most recurring entry, the team could not ignore ‘Buddy’, submitted by Sydneysider Jo White, for being the perfect fit for the friendly new bub.

“Buddy is quite literally the perfect name for our new koala joey. He left his mother’s pouch at only eight months, and whilst our koala joeys usually stay snuggled up with mum, getting their much-needed 20+ hours of sleep a day, this little guy appears to be more interested in making friends,” says Caroline Monro, Wild Life Supervisor at Wild Life Sydney Zoo. “Buddy can often be found holding tight onto mum’s back to catch a better glimpse of his visitors throughout the day. Buddy really just wants to be everybody’s buddy!”

Buddy was welcomed into the world in October last year and is the daughter of Bruce and Kyara, and the sibling of Kikki who was born in the last breeding season. The koala joey will join his other koala-ty friends on Koala Rooftop in the Darling Harbour attraction, and will help to further educate the public on the need to protect the Australian-native species which is currently listed as vulnerable in the wild.

This school holidays, Wild Life Sydney Zoo has partnered with Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet to invite guests on a quoll-ity quest to discover fascinating features about the amazing places our Australian friends call home. Through daily education talks and the attraction’s Koala Encounter experience, visitors can also get up close and personal with the iconic marsupial and learn about their important place in the ecosystem.
