Zagame’s House is proud to announce that its Group Executive Chef, Chris Bonello has won the AHA Australian Chef of the Year.

Held on Monday night at The Star in the Gold Coast, the AHA National Awards brought together over 500 VIP and industry guests to celebrate the very best in the Australian hotel, tourism and pub industries.

Accepting the role of the Zagame Corporation’s Group Executive Chef back in 2016, Bonello has become recognised for his refined, seasonally driven dining at Zagame’s Berwick MPD Steak Kitchen. Following his six years at Vue Group in Melbourne, his latest role working at the family owned Zagame’s has now secured him the AHA Australian Chef of the Year after acquiring the Chef of the Year title at the AHA State Award’s last year.

“I am so proud to win this award, it is such an honour. I can’t thank my colleagues enough for all their hard-work and support, they are like family to me. A fantastic, passionate team, alongside the opportunity to constantly utilise top quality, seasonal produce is a recipe for success,” Bonello said, after receiving the award.

The talented Executive Chef is now also behind the newest Zagame Corporation venture, Zagame’s House in Carlton, which also features a wine bar and shop, Lord Lygon. Here, Bonello has played an integral role curating its refined breakfast menu at its in-house café 1851, as well as its wine bar menu, that features the very best of Victorian produce in share plate form.

Recently launched in May 2019 on Lygon Street Carlton, design-driven Zagame’s House is the result of a complete 18-million-dollar transformation of the former hotel operated by the Zagame family for 16 years. The extensive renovations were led by Robert Zagame, Architect Robert Ficarra, Interlandi Mantesso Architects, and interior design team Linda Whitfield, Surround Style and Kas Makohon, Lukas Partners, with many of the furnishings and artworks being sourced and selected from boutique, local suppliers by the Zagame brothers themselves. Distinctive commissioned artworks completed on-site by artists Ryan Foote, Rosie Wood, Lulu Zagame and Karl Gordon spearhead the eclectic aesthetic of the hotel and showcase the creative DNA of its location.
