Mayfair Iconic Properties has released its initial vision for upgrades to the Dunk Island Spit, the first step in its plans to reinstate Dunk Island and the greater Mission Beach area as one of Australia’s premier tourism destinations.
The vision will see the development of a new public beach bar and café, upgrades to camping, barbecue and toilet facilities, as well as sand replenishment and revegetation, enhancing the Spit’s appeal to families and those seeking nature-based tourism experiences.

or the design of the area, Mayfair Iconic Properties is working with well-known Port Douglas-based architectural firm Hunt Design, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, environmental consultants and other key stakeholders to ensure that the Dunk Island Spit is in keeping with the natural beauty of the region.
Mayfair Iconic Properties announcement comes following its selection as the preferred tenderer by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council for the 30-year lease of the Dunk Island Spit.
Mr Duplock commented, “We are steadfast in our commitment to reviving Dunk Island and the Mission Beach region.
“The opening of the Spit bar and café and the corresponding upgrade to facilities will also provide the opportunity for an improved ferry service and the return of water-based activities and events to the region.
“We expect that the upgrades will be complete and the Spit be fully operational in time for the beginning of the tourist season in June 2020.
“Through this, and other investments in the region, Mayfair Iconic Properties is working to bring about positive change to this area and its economy. We are well advanced in our planning and excited by the opportunity to be in a position to re-open the Dunk Island Spit facilities in the short-term.”
In September 2019, Mayfair Iconic Properties announced it was set to make a major investment into the region, including the purchase of the former Dunk Island Resort and over 200 properties on the mainland.
Since this time, Mayfair 101 has now settled on over 60 of the around 230 plus properties it has committed to purchase in the region over the next 18 months, representing a mixture of residential, commercial, vacant land and rural lots, as part of its long-term vision to re-shape the region.
Final plans for the Spit are subject to Council approval.
