Spread the love

The Finger Lakes, one of New York State’s eleven regions, has launched a new 2020 tourism campaign called Brave Women. The campaign celebrates the inspiring women of the Finger Lakes’ past, present and future, highlighting spots where women have made history, women-owned and -managed businesses and prominent figures in the women’s rights movement.

Spearheaded by a collection of counties and supported by the Finger Lakes Regional Tourism Council and I LOVE NEW YORK, the campaign comes as the United States celebrates 100 years since women won the right to vote. The Finger Lakes region was at the heart of this historic revolution and is unofficially known as the birthplace of the women’s rights movement in the United States.

Trailblazers like Susan B Anthony, who was a legendary suffragist, abolitionist and civil rights leader, lived and campaigned in the region; it was the location of the first women’s rights convention in the United States; and there are a number of historic landmarks and museums, including the Women’s Rights National Historic Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame, available to explore today.

As part of the campaign, the Finger Lakes has launched a dedicated microsite – bravewomenflx.com – where visitors can find itineraries paying homage to courageous women from the region, as well as information on women-owned and -managed breweries, wineries, attractions and shops. For example:

Colloca Estate Winery, which is co-owned by Mindy Colloca and is the producer of New York’s 2019 Riesling of the Year
Prison City Pub & Brewery, which is co-owned by Dawn Schulz and supports women in craft beer through fundraising events and initiatives
The Inns of Aurora, a collection of five historic properties situated in the small town of Aurora on the shores of Cayuga Lake, each lovingly restored by Pleasant T. Rowland.

A four-hour drive from New York City, the Finger Lakes is a beautiful region, offering lakes for swimming or kayaking, hiking trails and locally produced cheese, beer and wine, as well as museums, shops and galleries that can be enjoyed year-round.
