Spread the love

I must admit that I initially thought of 375ml bottles rather than these of the normal 750ml volume when I heard of Jacob’s Creek’s new Better by Half brand.

But I was wrong. The ‘half’ in the name refers to principally to alcohol level rather than bottle size and the good news for serious weight-watchers is that the wines also carry half the normal calories.

I don’t normally review lower-alcohol wines because I find them a bit thin and lacking in flavour, but these are pretty good even if I wouldn’t drink them out of choice. So here they are:

WINE REVIEWS

Jacob’s Creek 2019 Better by Half Pinot Grigio ($22): As these aren’t necessarily my favourite wines I’ll leave the comments largely to the winemaker’s notes. A fruity pinot grigio with gentle mouthfeel and the flavours of citrus and pear. Enjoy with light seafood dishes such as king george whiting.

Jacob’s Creek NV Better by Half Brut Cuvée ($22): A classic Australian sparkling wine, featuring the crispness of green apple, with floral notes and a refreshing finish. Crunchy green apple with the richness of nashi pear are seen on the dry, zesty finish. Try with light summery dishes such as a leek-and-gruyère tart.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Jacob’s Creek 2019 Better by Half Rosé ($22): The best of the trio. Fresh red berry fruit, and showing raspberry and strawberry, with a gentle texture and a refreshing finish. Enjoy with smoked meats and tapas. Pair with a charcuterie platter or a grazing board.
