Spring is in the air at IZAKAYA BY K with a ‘Spring Delight’ seasonal menu of exclusive Japanese seafood specialties launching on 30 April 2021 at the fashionable Tseung Kwan O social hub. Japanese halfbeak ‘sayori’, snow crab, grilled clams and traditional grilled snapper are all jet-fresh on the seasonal menu along with classy Japanese sake and beer at the vibrant hotspot.

Modelled after Tokyo’s legendary ‘after work’ izakayas with a fashionable refined twist, IZAKAYA BY K has been warmly welcomed for its lively vibe and stylish izakaya fare since opening in February 2021.  The ‘Spring Delight’ seasonal menu now features freshest seafood from around Japan, underlining its vision of classic Japanese tradition re-imagined in contemporary style, putting Tseung Kwan O on the destination dining map.

Seasonal Sayori Sashimi (HK$238), or Japanese halfbeak, is now at its clean and delightful seasonal peak after the spawning season when the delicate flesh is firmest with subtle, delicious flavour.  Jet-fresh from Kyushu with mashed ginger and sour sauce, it is a perfect snack or appetiser with great beer or sake.

Grilled Snow Crab Shell with Miso (HK$168) is the pride of Japan for its elegant, succulent flavour – and the ‘matsuba’ crab from Tottori is the most prized of all, packed with addictive, delicious goodness from the region’s plankton-rich seafloor.  Served on a robatayaki with raw quail egg yolk, crab roe and the chef’s secret recipe miso, this presentation truly honours the Japanese saying, “eat crab and become speechless”.

Grilled Clams 5 Kinds (HK$88) is IZAKAYA BY K’s tribute to one of Japan’s most popular izakaya specialties, with clams in five different flavours, by tradition enjoyed from light to strong flavoured in specific order of taste-bud cleansing radish, rich-tasting Japanese saltyaki sea salt, zesty citrus yuzu, creamy mentaiko, and aromatic sansho pepper.

Kombu-Grilled Snapper with Chives (HK$178) with yuzu vinaigrette is unusually upmarket fare for izakaya dining, grilled medium-rare over ‘kombu’ seaweed from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido to absorb its deliciously elegant, aromatic and savoury umami, unique to traditional Japanese cuisine.

As well as seafood, Japanese Pork Belly Hoba-Yaki (HK$178) is distinctively flavoured with wrapping of dried honoki (magnolia) leaf, from the mountains of Kyoto, for a lovely ‘hoba-yaki’ fragrance to pork belly when gently smoke-roasted over a robatayaki, with seasonal vegetables such as Japanese scallion and green pepper.

IZAKAYA BY K also has an extensive sake menu enhancing the izakaya experience with hand-selected sakes including TOMIO Fu Junmai Daiginjo (HK$218 / 300ml) and TOYONOAKI Shizuku Tobindori Daiginjo (HK$298 / 300ml), both floral, slightly sweet, refreshing and smooth for pairing with shellfish and seafood.  SEIUN Hayate Twilight of the Gods Junmai Ginjo (HK$768 / 720ml) is slightly dry, refreshing and floral, pairing not only with seafood but also meat, sushi and tempura.  Fruity, slightly dry KAIKOU OMOI Junmai Daiginjo (HK$788 / 720ml) partners sashimi, sushi, skewers and tempura; while sweet, delicate and fruity Musashino Sparkling Sake 12% (HK$530 / 720ml) matches seafood, sushi and tempura.

In the jolly izakaya spirit, Sapporo Beer is on draft (HK$88) or bottle (HK$58) along with hidden shochu, craft gins, liqueur and whisky gems from Japan.

Set lunch menus are also exquisite yet affordable.  ‘Teishoku’ set with miso soup, salad, Japanese pickles and rice comes with over 10 main course options, priced from HK$108 to HK$248; ‘Japanese Curry Set’ with miso soup and salad is priced HK$118; and ‘Donburi Set’ with miso soup, salad, Japanese pickles and savoury egg custard offers 10 main course options, priced HK$98 to HK$288; along with Beef Udon (HK$88) and Kitsune-udon (HK$78).

A fox statue and playful interior décor of 150 fox figurines and paintings pay homage to IZAKAYA BY K’s design, inspired by Japan’s 30,000 Inari shrines where the fox ‘kitsune’ is revered as messenger of the mythological god and symbol of prosperity and success.

The 2,600-square feet, 125-seat restaurant is also divided into various zones and semi-private dining areas for a cosy social vibe, perfect for various gatherings, from family dinners and small celebrations to social gatherings and dinner dates.

IZAKAYA BY K opens alongside sister restaurant TEPPANYAKI MIHARA next door at Shop G07, The Parkside, 18 Tong Chun Street, Tseung Kwan O, New Territories, Hong Kong; opens daily from 12 noon–3pm and 6pm–midnight.
